UPS/Uninterruptible power supply
UPS-systems
In many areas we can no longer imagine today being without UPS-systems. Whereas in the past only absolutely essential equipment was protected against line disturbances by UPS-systems, nowadays each risky component which is required for smooth operation is protected by UPS-systems, helped by compact designs, modern technology and low prices. Nowadays it's impossible to imagine banks, printers, computer and logistics centres, broadcasting centres etc. without UPS-systems. We can provide you with the right system across all the performance range and for every application.
On-line ProcedureIn the classic on-line procedure (double conversion), a stabilized, distortion-free AC-voltage is permanently generated by an inverter, which is entirely independent of the quality of the line voltage supplying the system. For the user, this means that apart from supplying consumers in the event of a power failure, the system filters all line disturbances. The battery is not used in the event of line under voltage, frequency deviation and distorted input voltage. |
Off-line ProcedureOff-line systems supply the consumer from the mains. The system is only switched to inverter mode in case of a power breakdown or if the line voltage deviates dramatically from the nominal ratings. Line-interactive off-line UPS-systems are an economical alternative. |
10 Reasons For Buying an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
- Power Failure is responsible for 28% of computer system breakdowns
- Over one third of companies take more than a day to recover from the disruption caused by a power failure. 10% take more than a week
- Because of a power failure, 33% of companies lose between £10 000 and £250 000, 20% lose between £250000 and £1 million, 15% lose over £1 million
- Out of 450 leading companies surveyed, each suffered an average of 9 computer failures each year. (Source: Find FVP/Fortune 1000 companies)
- Following a power failure it can take up to 48 hours to reconfigure a network system or a multi terminal
- It can take days, weeks or even months to re-input lost data. Sometimes data is lost forever, for instance in CAD or graphics applications where original work can never be recreated
- Ten consequences of computer breakdowns:

|
- Loss of market share, damage to a companies reputation, and loss of goodwill are not covered by insurance following a computer disaster
- Insurance claims take a long time to settle - well after the disaster has occurred
- 90% of all companies that experience a computer disaster and don't have a survival plan go out of business within 18 months (Source: Price Waterhouse)
View of Shutdown-Software
To ensure the perfect protection for your data, it's necessary that the connected PCs are capable to communicate with the UPS-system. This communication will be achieved by the shutdown software.
For this the serial interface of the PC gets connected with the signal output of the UPS.
There are extensive shutdown-software-blocks for the UPS-systems available.
The software interrogates the state of operation of the UPS and guarantees an orderly, automatically shutdown of the operating system in case of mains failure and discharged battery, so that every data file and all processes get closed.
After ending the shutdown-process the UPS can be switch off, so that the PC can start up without difficulties in case of mains return.
The software is delivered on 3,5 " disks or on a CD (other data media are possible) with a connection-wire. The installation of the shutdown-software is easy.
It's possible to connect various operating systems with the UPS-system. The connection could be done by a multiplexer or for special operating systems the signal could be transferred via data line.
It's also possible to send the data of the UPS-systems via SNMP-adapter to management stations.
The shutdown-software is available for following operating-systems among others:
DOS. OS/2, IBM LAN SERVER MAC OS
WINDOWS 3:x, WINDOWS 95/98/2000/XP, WINDOWS NT workstation and server
